- The intercom buzzes or hums constantly, even when nobody is at the gate. This is almost always a failing capacitor on the intercom board or a corroded ground connection at the keypad housing. Ignoring the buzz usually leads to the board burning out completely within a few weeks.
- The gate opens with the code but the intercom audio is distorted or one-way. The speaker cone in the exterior unit is degraded or the wiring to the indoor handset has a short. In Corona’s summer, we see speakers that have literally baked in the sun until the cone material turned brittle.
- The system works fine during the day but acts up at night. This is a classic sign of a failing transformer or a battery backup that no longer holds a charge. The Elite keypad draws extra current when the backlight kicks on, and a weak transformer can’t supply it.
- The keypad lights up and accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad is fine; the problem is usually in the opener’s control board or a relay. This is the most misdiagnosed symptom we see: people replace the keypad when the real issue is fifteen dollars’ worth of relay on the opener side.
